AMADA 4kW CO2 to 12kW Fiber Retrofit: System Integration and Test Results

AMADA CO₂-to-fiber retrofit · U.S. field project

From 4kW CO₂ to 12kW fiber: inside the system integration

The field team explains how the laser source, cutting head, fiber delivery cable, chiller, control signals and original AMADA workflow were brought together in a nine-day retrofit.

4kW → 12kW Original CNC workflow Nine-day installation 32 mm carbon steel test

Engineering interview

A retrofit is successful only when the complete machine works as one system.

This episode focuses on the practical engineering behind upgrading an older industrial laser platform while retaining the operator’s familiar AMADA control environment.

  • Review which CO₂ components were removed and which machine systems remained.
  • Follow the fiber-cable routing and cable-carrier clearance challenge.
  • Understand how new alarms were connected to the original AMADA CNC.
  • Compare the commissioning test with the customer’s normal production range.

Project specification

Documented configuration and acceptance targets

Parameter Project value Engineering significance
Original laser system 4kW CO₂ Defines the original beam-delivery, cooling and laser-control architecture to be removed or adapted.
Retrofit laser system 12kW fiber Requires a power-matched source, cutting head, chiller, electrical supply, extraction and safety assessment.
Machine control Original AMADA operating workflow retained Reduces operator disruption while the retrofit interface processes fiber-system commands and alarms.
On-site duration Approximately 9 days Five days for removal and installation, three for integration and tests, and one for training.
Main production material Carbon steel, approximately 8–16 mm Represents the customer’s actual production requirement and should drive parameter development.
Commissioning test Stainless and carbon steel, including 32 mm carbon steel Confirms an extended capability explored during commissioning; it is not the same as the normal production range.
Automation Automatic sheet-loading workflow retained The converted laser must fit the existing material-handling and production sequence, not operate as an isolated machine.

System architecture

What changed—and what remained in the production platform

System area Retrofit action Technical requirement
CO₂ resonator and beam path Remove the original CO₂-specific assemblies and free-space beam-delivery components. Isolate and document the original system before removal; preserve interfaces needed by the retained machine.
Fiber laser source Install a new 12kW source and connect it to the cutting head through the delivery fiber. Provide correct electrical service, grounding, cooling, emission permission and fault handling.
Cutting head Replace the CO₂ head with a fiber-compatible head rated for the selected power. Verify mechanical mounting, focus function, gas delivery, height control, optics protection and safe axis travel.
Fiber routing Route the delivery cable through the available cable-carrier path. Maintain specified bend radius and clearance while preventing twisting, abrasion and interference over full travel.
Cooling Integrate a chiller suitable for the new fiber source and cutting head. Confirm flow, temperature, water quality, alarms and stop response for every cooled circuit.
CNC and alarms Interface the new fiber equipment with the original AMADA control environment. Translate operating commands and return source, chiller, cutting-head and interlock faults to the machine.
Automation Retain the existing loading and operating workflow where compatible. Verify handshakes, cycle behavior and safe recovery through the complete automated sequence.

Control and alarm path

Keeping the original CNC while adding fiber-system functions

The interview describes an integration approach in which operators continue using a familiar AMADA workflow. A dedicated retrofit interface handles the differences between the original CO₂ commands and the functions required by the new source, cutting head and cooling system.

Original AMADA CNCCycle commands, machine states and operator workflow
Retrofit interfaceCommand processing, permissions, feedback and alarm mapping
Fiber subsystems12kW source, cutting head, chiller and safety interlocks

Control requirement: the interface must do more than start the laser. It must confirm readiness, enforce emission permission, stop the process when required and return useful fault information to the original machine environment.

Nine-day field workflow

Removal, installation, integration, validation and training

Days 1–5

Hardware work

Remove CO₂ equipment; install the 12kW source, fiber head, delivery cable, chiller, custom cables and required mechanical parts.

Days 6–7

System integration

Connect electrical and control interfaces, process signals, map alarms and verify machine responses and interlocks.

Day 8

Cutting validation

Develop and check parameters across stainless and carbon steel thicknesses, including the 32 mm carbon steel trial.

Day 9

Operator handover

Train operators on the retained workflow, updated procedures, alarm response, process operation and fiber-laser safety.

Engineering notes

Four checks that determine whether an older machine is a good candidate

Mechanical condition

The frame, gantry, guides, drives, exchange table and motion accuracy must still justify retaining the platform.

Control access

The team must be able to identify commands, machine states, alarms, interlocks and automation handshakes reliably.

Power compatibility

The source, head, chiller, electrical supply, extraction, gas delivery and enclosure must suit the selected laser power.

Production fit

Power and process parameters should be selected around the real material mix, thickness distribution and quality target.

Selection principle: a single maximum-thickness cut is not the production specification. Stable performance across the customer’s normal 8–16 mm carbon-steel workload is the more meaningful acceptance target.

For retrofit project review

Send your machine details for an initial engineering assessment.

Include the machine brand and model, manufacturing year, current laser power, CNC version, table size, main materials and thickness range. Photos of the machine, cutting head, electrical cabinet, cable carrier and automation will help the engineering team evaluate compatibility and prepare a practical retrofit recommendation.
