TRUMPF CO₂-to-fiber retrofit · hardware explained
Inside a TRUMPF CO₂-to-fiber laser retrofit
Bob puts the actual components on the table and explains how the cutting head, height sensing, autofocus, control interface, optical protection, and custom hardware work together.
Main episode
This is a system-integration project, not only a laser-source swap.
Xiaodong asks Bob to explain the components that make the converted machine practical, serviceable, and compatible with the original TRUMPF platform.
- ✓See how original height-sensing components can be retained.
- ✓Understand autofocus, duty-cycle, and nozzle-centering control.
- ✓Follow the signal path between the TRUMPF CNC and fiber system.
- ✓Learn why final commissioning still has to happen on site.

What changes—and what can remain part of the original machine
| System area | Retrofit approach discussed in the episode | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting head | Replace the CO₂ head with a power-matched fiber laser cutting head. | The optics, beam delivery, focus mechanism, and nozzle requirements are different. |
| Height sensing | Adapt selected original TRUMPF capacitive sensing components to the new head. | This preserves a proven part of the original height-control architecture. |
| Control interface | Add a controller that translates original machine signals into fiber-laser commands. | The new source needs enable, power, frequency, duty-cycle, and focus-related control. |
| Protection | Monitor optical temperature and return alarms to the retrofit controller. | Abnormal temperature can indicate contaminated or damaged optics. |
| Mechanical fit | Use custom mounting plates, brackets, drag-chain supports, and nozzle adapters. | Machine geometry and cable routing must be solved for the specific installation. |
Control logic
Why duty-cycle and autofocus control must be added
The original CO₂ configuration primarily provides laser power and frequency commands. The fiber process also depends on duty cycle, especially during piercing. If energy is delivered too aggressively, piercing can become unstable and create heavy spatter or blowout.
The added touchscreen gives technicians access to duty-cycle settings for piercing, cutting, marking, engraving, and protective-film removal. It also provides manual focus control and a nozzle-centering test for setup and maintenance.
Key point: the retrofit controller allows the original CNC to remain the main machine control while supplying the extra functions required by the fiber laser source and autofocus cutting head.
Integration workflow
From prepared components to a production-ready machine
Prepare
Assemble and factory-test the controller, cutting head, servo drive, wiring, and mechanical hardware.
Install
Fit the cutting head, custom mounts, cable chain, cooling, gas, electrical, and control connections.
Verify
Check alarms, interlocks, focus movement, nozzle alignment, signal behavior, and machine safety.
Commission
Tune piercing and cutting parameters, run trial cuts, and validate the machine under production conditions.
Engineering notes
Power matching
The laser source, cutting head, chiller, electrical supply, extraction, and safety measures must all suit the selected power.
Remote diagnostics
A connected service gateway can help engineers review alarms and system status, but it does not replace physical commissioning.
Model differences
TRUMPF machines vary by model, controller version, layout, and operating history, so final adjustments are machine-specific.
Professional installation
Mechanical alignment, electrical integration, safety validation, and process tuning should be completed by experienced personnel.
